Berlin Part 1 - Pre-WWI & Other Stuff

Lots of history here, even before the Cold War.  The figure on top of the gate represents victory riding on a chariot.  The plaza the figure is riding towards is called the Pariser Platz.  Though in their defence, they only named it that because Napoleon stole the figure on top of the gate and took it back to Paris after he conquered Berlin...

Bridge over (no longer) troubled waters

What I did:
  • August 25, 2012 - Arrival from Copenhagen, met up with Jakub for a beer and a brief tour of some of the highlights of Berlin (this dude is legen - wait for it...  and I hope you're not lactose intolerant because the second party is - dary), got back to the hostel early and crashed due to lack of sleep from the previous night (big thanks to Zophia & Seb & the rest of team Sweden, hehehe).
  • August 26, 2012 - Free walking tour by New Europe (aka Sandeman's).
  • August 27, 2012 - Explored the city, checked out some museums, and revisited some of the stops from the walking tour.
  • August 28, 2012 - Same as the previous day, explored the city, did some museum hopping, and revisited a few more of the stops from before for a more in-depth look.
  • August 29, 2012 - Departed for Vienna

Highlights:
  • Beer & Meat - I love German cuisine.  Lots of beer, lots of meat!  Sounds good to me!  :D
  • Friendly People - Some Germans have told me that the Germans are a cold people.  This was my second trip to Germany, and I still have no idea what the hell those guys were talking about.  People here have been very friendly (if a little direct at times) and are always happy to go out of their way to speak to you in (generally excellent) English.
  • Walking tour - I saw most of the major sights in Berlin and met a bunch of cool people from all over the world (literally met somebody from every continent except for, obviously, Antarctica) on the free walking tour by New Europe.  Our guide was a little ball of energy from Wales named Sophia, I highly recommend her and New Europe!

I went to the Pergamonmuseum, on Jakub's recommendation

Good call Jakub.  It was totally worth it to go!

Still the Pergamonmuseum!

Lowlights:
  • I had heard that the party scene in Berlin is awesome and unlike anywhere else, but I was too tired to make it out because I was doing too much touristy stuff during the days (I know, I'm a failure...)

Can't Miss:  Beer & meat!!!  :D

Grabbing a beer with some new friends (unfortunately, not pictured)

Wiener schnitzel!

Pig's knuckle!  Bigger than my fist (and probably tastes better too, if you've asked anybody that's eaten a knuckle sandwich)
