This is our room and this is what I saw as soon as I got there. WOW!!! |
The Amalfi Coast is similar to the Cinque Terre, but more touristy and more inhabited. Where you take a train around the 5Terre to get between the villages, a bus network takes you to the different towns and villages of the Amalfi Coast (with trains operating between Naples and Sorrento). I didn't know much about the Amalfi before I came (funny how often I've found myself saying that throughout this trip), but I'm really glad I came. I actually think I enjoyed this more than 5Terre because there was so much variety to the experiences in this area. I've split my experiences among four posts, with a certain theme to each.
This is definitely in the running for the best meal I had during my whole trip... |
What I did:
- September 22, 2012 - High-speed train from Florence to Naples, slow train/subway from Naples to Sorrento, bus from Sorrento to Positano
- September 23, 2012 - Boat day trip to the Isle of Capri
- September 24, 2012 - Towns of Raveno and Amalfi
- September 25, 2012 - Pompeii
- September 26, 2012 - Naples
- September 27, 2012 - Bus to Sorrento, slow train/subway to Naples, flight to Barcelona
Highlights:
- Seafood - Wow, the seafood here is amazing. Some of the best I've ever had. It's fantastic how they don't have too do anything crazy, just preparing the food in a simple way and and letting the quality of the ingredients speak for themselves.
- The views - Oh yeah you better believe the views here are incredible. Doesn't matter where you are, every sunset is postcard material.
- Something for everybody - You like big cities? Go to Naples. It's gritty and authentic Southern Italian. You want history? Pompeii. Looking for a fun day on the water? Oh yeah, we've got Capri. And for views, you can refer to my previous point.
Breakfast every morning! The people at Holiday House Gilda were the nicest! |
These is some bigass lemons. These weren't even the biggest we saw... And I think they grow them using old-school methods, no pesticides, no genetic modifications. |
Lowlights:
- Not enough time! Wish I had at least another day here... or another month, hahaha.
